Respighi’s Ancient Airs and Dances _Suite is based on lute songs, themed around the pleasure and sadness of love. _Crisantemi by Puccini was written in response to the sudden death of one of the composer’s friends, with the name reflecting the symbolism of the chrysanthemum flower in Italy, where it represents heroism, loyalty and mourning_. The performance closes with Tchaikovsky’s _Souvenir de Florence, a musical memento of a holiday he took in that city. This sextet for two violins, two violas and two cellos is full of brilliance, brightness and lyricism – the memory of a sun-filled day in Tuscany will bring warmth to the heart and put a spring in your step!
