Windsor & Eton Choral Society - Mendelssohn's Elijah

This activity is completed or marked as expired

Details

Commissioned by the Birmingham Festival 1846, it was very much the Messiah of its day, a hugely popular work that absolutely cemented Mendelssohn's position as one of the greatest composers of sacred music. Two thousand people attended the premiere performance of Elijah. The Times review published shortly afterwards said ‘The last note of Elijah was drowned in a long-continued unanimous volley of plaudits, vociferous and deafening ... never was there a more complete triumph; never a more thorough and speedy recognition of a great work of art.’
