WALKING WITH WITCHCRAFT: In the footsteps of Mary Bateman (As part of Leeds Festival of Gothica) Mary Bateman was one of the most notorious citizens of Leeds at the turn of the 1800s. She was a thief, con artist, purveyor of quack medicines, a person who could counteract bewitchment, a would-be Messiah, a poisoner and a murderer. Yet official histories do not remember her. The man who dissected her body and sold off strips of her skin has a blue plaque in his honour. Mary has none. But history is not just about the lives of the great and the good. Real history should include evil as well. Come with us and explore the Dark Side of Georgian Leeds.Speaker: Dave Weldrake
