She was a thief, con artist, purveyor of quack medicines, a person who could counteract bewitchment, a would-be Messiah, a poisoner and a murderer. Yet official histories do not remember her. The man who dissected her body and sold off strips of her skin has a blue plaque in his honour. Mary has none. But history is not just about the lives of the great and the good.
