Tnl: Living With Machines

Details

Tuesday Night Live: LIVING WITH MACHINES Doors 7.00pm Music 7.15pm

Living with Machines brings together Yorkshire-based folk artists Pete Dilley, Alice Jones, Simon Robinson and Katy Ryder. The project takes its name from a 2022-2023 exhibition co-curated by Leeds City Museum and the British Library, exploring the dramatic impact of new technology on every day lives for those living throught he industrial revolution. Printed ballad sheets, having been sold cheaply and distributed across the country are largely important in telling these stories.

As part of the exhibition, the musicians were invited to interpret and record a selection of these 19th century ballads from the British Library's collection and even the nine songs which make up the album 'Living with Machines' provide vital information about changes in working conditions, protests and strikes during this time.

In bringing these old songs in a wider audience, this project hopes to forge a link between today's technologically dependent population and those who were adjusting to 'living with machines' 150 years ago.
