THE WOODENTOPS

"Hypno Beat" Live

  • Is Bliss

The Woodentops formed in London, England in 1983. The name refers to a British children's television show in the 1950's, but is also a common term for acoustic guitar, which the band's sound was initially based on. Leader and founder Rolo McGinty purposely intended the acoustic guitars to be included and strummed vigorously, as a counterpoint to the popular sounds of the time. Added to the mix were musicians playing such instruments as accordion, trumpet and marimba.

Their 1986 debut album "Giant" reached number 35 in the UK national charts. In 1987 their song "Why?" became a balearic classic and was played constantly in Ibiza during the second summer of Love. The Woodentops have worked with Lee Scratch Perry, Tony Humphries, Paul Oakenfold, Big Audio Dynamite, Skip MacDonald & more.
