Enhancing a performance for the visually impaired.

We offer free touch tours and audio described performances at a specially discounted price for our visually impaired patrons. (Their guest, in attendance with them, is also entitled to a specially discounted ticket price.)

These performances are audio described by members of Scottish Ballet staff or regular freelancers, including Paulene Laverty. Paulene was a dancer with Scottish Ballet for eight years and has over 22 years of experience of delivering audio descriptions for ballet, theatre and pantomime. All our describers have a deep understanding of Scottish Ballet and its performances and, as such, provides the highest quality descriptions for our audiences.

When booking, you will be sent a CD containing a brief synopsis of the ballet and detailed descriptions of the characters, costumes and set.

On the day of the show a touch tour offers the opportunity to get up close to a selection of costumes and props as well as to hear more about the dancers, the characters they are playing and some examples of gestures and movements specific to the performance.

Visually impaired audience members are provided with headsets and, as the curtain rises, the audio description begins. The live commentary given by a member of the Scottish Ballet team describes the movement and action on stage whilst allowing enough space to enjoy and appreciate the music played by the orchestra of Scottish Ballet.

Tickets can be booked via the box office by telephone or in person. Please let the box office know if you require a headset when booking and they can advise of the best seats in the auditorium for you.

Cast lists and programme articles are also available in braille or large print on request. Please contact Lorna Murray on 0141 331 6285 or email engagement@scottishballet.co.uk.

Audio described performances are at 2pm, preceded by a free touch tour at 12.30pm. Book through your preferred venue’s box office in person or by telephone.
