Schubert - Symphony No.8 Elgar - Cello Concerto Nielsen - Symphony No.1
For our final concert of the season the SSO will perform three bastions of the Romantic Period. We open with Franz Schubert's haunting Unfinished Symphony (No.8) in B minor. The symphony occupied Schubert for many years, only to be abandoned and left unfinished. This work has been a mainstay of the repertoire since its première in 1865.
We welcome back East Yorkshire local and virtuoso cellist, Christina Waldock. Christina delighted audiences with her warm, introspective interpretation of the Dvoák Cello Concerto. Tonight, Christina will perform Edward Elgar's Cello Concerto in E minor - a work that needs no introduction.
We close our season with one of our Musical Director's favourite composers, Carl Nielsen, and his Symphony No.1 in G minor. A direct contemporary of Jean Sibelius, Nielsen's symphonies are at the forefront of 20th Century symphonic development. Join us for this joyous close to our 2023/2024 season
