Duruflé began writing his Requiem mass as a response to the Second World War. He effortlessly fuses the lyricism of Gregorian plainchant with his own harmonies to give a work which is deeply beautiful, consoling and sumptuously orchestrated in this version for string orchestra, harp and organ.
