The sublime slow movement, marked ‘tender and sustained’, would alone be worth the concert ticket, but a performance of Beethoven’s C sharp minor quartet is surely unmissable. This great work, which Beethoven himself considered the summit of his achievement in quartet writing, is unsurpassed in its emotional and dramatic scale. It is music that, to borrow Mahler’s phrase, really does ‘embrace the world’.
