Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition is often heard in orchestral versions, but in fact this piano version is in fact the original. A sequence of promenades interleaved with musical representations of works by architect and painter Viktor Hartmann displayed at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. This is beautifully contrasted with Debussy’s evocative, impressionistic Images.
