Coleridge-Taylor - Ballade for Orchestra Dvoák - Violin Concerto Brahms - Symphony No.3

We open the final concert of our season with Samuel Coleridge- Taylor's Ballade for Orchestra. Sir Edward Elgar recommended the 23-year-old to the leaders of the Three Choirs Festival, with a commission work for their 1898 concert series. Elgar wrote that Coleridge-Taylor was far and away the cleverest fellow going amongst all the young men. We are delighted to welcome Andy Long, of Opera North, to perform Dvoák's Violin Concerto. It was written for Joseph Joachim, one of the leading violinists of the nineteenth century and one who occupies a special place in the history of violin playing. The concerto is full of all of the wonderful musical traits that attracts so many of us to Dvoák's music. This will be a stunningly joyous occasion. We close with Brahms's Symphony No.3. Premièred in 1883, the orchestral masterpiece has become a favourite of the concert hall ever since. The perfect way to close our 2022-2023 season.
