Jonny Lo's Leaving Concert

Details

After 9 wonderful years, Jonny Lo is moving on to pastures new in Australia. For his farewell concert we are programming works close to his heart:

We open with Mendelssohn's Overture to a Midsummer Night's Dream. Although we'll be about a month before midsummer, it's such a wonderful work that we really couldn't wait. With shimmering fast quavers, a romantic theme for the lovers, and a 'hee-haw' from poor Bottom, it should be a fantastic start to a special night.

Next, He Zhanhao and Chen Gang's Butterfly Lover's Concerto. The concerto (written when both composers were still students at the Shanghai Conservatoire) tells the traditional Chinese story of the Butterfly Lovers. It is in 7 distinct sections but played as a continuous work. Although the work is sometimes performed on traditional Chinese instruments such as the pipa or the ehru, we will be joined by violinist Christopher Jones for the version best known to Western audiences.

After the interval, we will perform extracts from Prokofiev's ballet Romeo & Juliet. With all Jonny's years of conducting orchestras for major ballet companies, we could not be in safer hands.

NOTE: for logistical reasons we have to cease online sales before our afternoon rehearsal begins, but tickets will usually be available on the door. If in doubt, visit our website (www.newbristolsinfonia.org.uk) which we will update if the event sells out.
