German Choral Masterpieces

Details

To celebrate the journey towards Easter and Passiontide, Southern Voices present a programme of 'German Choral Masterpieces' in the hauntingly beautiful setting of St. Cross Church, Winchester. Aside from his organ works, Rheinberger's Mass for double choir in E-flat is perhaps his most famous work. Written in 1878, the Mass shows the composer's new-found freedom of writing and flexibility in his approach to sacred music, very much a response to the liturgical landscape of the time. With echoes of Bach to Mendelssohn, but with a harking back to the 'cori spezzati' of the Renaissance, this is a work to be witnessed in its full glory; the acoustics of St. Cross could not provide a better setting. Equally, the spacious and somehow orchestrally influenced choral motets of Bruckner and Brahms similarly celebrate an approach to choral writing that compliments the music of Rheinberger. Glorious in its outlook, these well-known motets will help to celebrate the wonderful tradition of choral music of the period. Do come along for an evening of inspirational and impressive music, sung by Southern Voices Chamber Choir.
