MENDELSSOHN Symphony No 3 Scottish in A minor Op 56 BRAHMS Symphony No 2 in D Op 73
Conductor Mark Shanahan Leader Sophie Cameron
We start 2025 with two well-loved symphonies from the Nineteenth Century.
Mendelssohns Scottish Symphony was inspired by a mythical romantic Scotland, which was reinforced by Mendelssohns trip to Britain in 1829, where he visited the highlands and islands, met Walter Scott and first sketched themes for both this symphony and the Hebrides overture. The Symphony was reworked a number of times, and it was first performed in 1842.
Brahmss Second Symphony dates from 1877, written relatively quickly (the First Symphony had been twenty years in the making) during a lovely summer holiday in Austria - and has glorious melodies, a cheerful tone and an almost pastoral atmosphere.
