Details

The Whistlebinkies is a traditional music group based in Glasgow, Scotland. Formed in the 1960s, the band is the most enduring Scottish folk music ensemble. It has played important roles in the revival of Scottish folk music including the early championing of the clarsach and bellows pipes and the bringing together previously separate instrumental traditions in regular concerted performance for the first time. For over fifty years the group has represented Scotland throughout the world including the first official tour by a Scottish folk music group of the People’s Republic of China, appearances at Scottish cultural festivals in the United States, Amsterdam, Netherlands, Iceland, Italy, Spain, Estonia, Belgium, Central France and Brittany. The band has appeared at Edinburgh International Festival, Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Rotterdam Festival, and toured Taiwan, France, Sweden and Germany. Artistic collaborations have included those with Hong Kong Chamber Orchestra, Yehudi Menuhin, David Essex, Cutting Crew and John Cage. The band has been recognised previously as BBC Radio 3 Artists of the Week. Recorded output includes six albums for Claddagh Records of Dublin and three for the Scottish Greentrax label. Tickets, priced £12.00, are available from Cowal Music Club’s website, or on the door.
