Celebrating Tosti With the Tosti International Singing Academy

Opera Rara continues its 2026/27 Salon Series with a day celebrating the life and music of composer Paolo Tosti (1846-1916). Alumni artists from the Tosti International Singing Academy, in a new partnership with the Academy, will present songs by Tosti alongside songs by his contemporaries. Born in Italy but with an influential career in London, Tosti was once the singing-master to the British royal family, and his compositions were staples in the salons of Europe and elsewhere.The pre-concert talk with music historian Flora Willson and a panel of Tosti scholars begins at 6:15pm.The entire day also includes a lunch and masterclass with various packages available to book. Founded in 2025 by Matthew Rose, international bass, the Tosti International Singing Academy finds its home in The Grand, Folkestone, where Tosti resided during his English years.The Tosti Academy provides a training ground for excellent conservatoire students, and emerging into the industry singers, where they work and perform with some of the world's leading opera and classical song practitioners. Alongside artistic director Matthew Rose, teachers and collaborators include Jennifer Larmore, Dame Sarah Connolly, Kate Royal, David Butt Philipp, Nicole Car, Sir Thomas Allen, Ben Glassberg, Jonathan Cohen, Benedicte Jourdois, Iain Burnside, Sholto Kynoch, Louisa Muller and Paul Daniel.This year 25 singers from 17 different countries performed in concerts, masterclasses and opera scenes, and worked privately with our esteemed faculty over a 12 day period.The 2027 Tosti Academy will take place 16-29 August in Folkestone.
