A former Irish Ambassador to Kuala Lumpur, Berlin, London and Washington, he is one of Ireland’s most distinguished diplomats.

Since retiring, he has held academic fellowships at New York University, Cambridge and Harvard.

An acclaimed author and commentator on Irish history and literature, his recent books include Ulysses: A Reader’s Odyssey and Pilgrim Soul.
