The Sorcerer

The Sorcerer, by W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, is a comic opera about Alexis, a young man who believes that love should overcome differences of age, class, and social position. To celebrate his engagement to Aline, he invites the villagers of Ploverleigh to a party and hires the sorcerer John Wellington Wells to provide a magical love potion. When the guests drink it, however, they fall instantly and irrationally in love with the first person of the opposite sex they see. The result is hilarious chaos: husbands and wives suddenly abandon their partners, young lovers pursue completely unsuitable people, and even the elderly villagers become caught up in the spell.
The potion's effects create a succession of absurd romantic pairings and threaten Alexis and Aline's engagement. Aline herself drinks the potion and, upon seeing Dr. Daly, the village vicar, falls passionately in love with him, leaving Alexis heartbroken. Eventually the enchantment is broken and everyone returns to normal, allowing Alexis and Aline to be reunited. John Wellington Wells must sacrifice himself to undo the spell, bringing the comic confusion to an end.
