Men and women showing off their naughty bits, domestic violence, strange beasts and monsters. Whats going on? Is the world turned upside down?From our very earliest churches, such as Saxon Deerhurst, grotesque creatures have guarded our churches from what lurks without. Kirsty Hartsiotis explores what these entities represent, how they reflect the world views of the people who built the churches and why there are so many, despite the Victorians tidying things up.In the later Middles Ages, we can discover that there are lots of naughty things humans can do and why these sins are there for us, and once the clergy and monastics, to meditate on, particularly, but certainly not only on misericords. And what jokes have been revealed in places where the carver thought no one would ever see?
