St Ives Choral Society Verdi Requiem

This powerful piece was composed in 1874 to honour the Italian writer and national hero Alessandro Manzoni.

Loved by musicians and audiences down the ages, it blends sacred Latin liturgy with the emotional intensity and theatrical power of grand opera.

From the quiet reflection of the opening to the terrifying thunder of the Dies Irae, and from the haunting, unadorned unison of the Agnus Dei to the serene, glowing texture of the Lux Aeterna, Verdi explores all corners of the human experience as it approaches its inevitable end.
