Ursula Harrison -Play By NumbersFunded by the Hinrichsen Foundation, Brecon Jazz Festival has commissioned local double bassistUrsula Harrison to compose an original set for a first performance at the Guildhall on Friday evening. Harrison said 'I'm hoping to work on bird migration and starling murmuration, but this will take some time to finalise, depending on what data I'm able to find and use!' Sounds interesting...!The use of numerical and mathematical processes has long been a big part of Harrison's compositional approach. After graduating with a BA in Mathematics and Music from Cardiff University in 2024, the wish to combine the two disciplines has been central to the young composer/bassist's development. Moving to Trondheim, Norway in summer 2025 prompted Harrison to set up a new band to start performing their math-music experiments. Bringing together a line-up of some of the finest young improvising musicians across Northern Europe, the quartet quickly developed a strong and unique group sound. Their first release Living Planet is a suite that explores the global biodiversity crisis, drawing on the probabilistic methods developed by Greek composer Iannis Xenakis in the second half of the 20th century.Line up:Amund Totland - Guitar
