Books
Here’s a sneak peek at a few of the books we’ll be talking about on the night (and that we’ll have available to borrow!):
In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado: An experimental and refreshingly honest memoir released in 2019. The author reflects on an abusive relationship she was in during her time studying for a Master in Fine Art degree.
Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan le Fanu: Predating Dracula by 25 years, this 1872 novella explores the obsessive relationship that develops between the narrator, Laura, and her mysterious pursuer, the vampire Carmilla. It has inspired many works of gothic literature and lesbian vampire media in the years since, including a campy 2010s web series of the same name.
Mean Time by Carol Ann Duffy: Scottish playwright and retired Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, explores the vast depth of human emotion in this poetry collection on desire, yearning, loss and finding peace.
