Gustave Dor was the most outstanding illustrator of the 19th century.
His ability to conjure up fantastic scenes of natural grandeur was unparalleled.
It was said he could convey more atmosphere in black and white than most great masters could do in colour.
Living and working mostly in Paris around the middle of the century he produced thousands of illustrations to epics such as the Bible, Dantes Inferno and Cervantes Don Quixote.
Invited to depict London he reveals a city where fantasy and reality fuse, bearing witness to contrasts of work and leisure, wealth and poverty, grandeur and squalor.
Almost by accident he records a turbulent phase of the industrial revolution never seen before or since.
Dominated by his mother, he never married, though repeatedly fell in love.
The lecture draws us into Dors astonishing world through a selection of his greatest works.
