Improving academic writing through an engagement with the philosophy of science and GenAI.
This workshop will be delivered by Dr.
Karin Zotzmann, an associate professor in Applied Linguistics at the University of Southampton. In this workshop, we approach academic writing through the lens of the philosophy of science.
This engagement with the meta-theoretic level helps us to step back from taken-for-granted assumptions and get acquainted with potentially more helpful ways to design and conduct research.
More concretely, we look at how to convey certainty and caution, how we write about causality, in particular the use of the passive voice and nominalisation, and how to anchor our work in a concisely written abstract and narrative.Further, conducting and communicating research is increasingly influenced by the availability of GenAI tools.
AI can help to clarify parts of academic writing and assist in overcoming writing anxiety, but it needs to be employed critically and responsibly.
The workshop includes the use of GenAI technology in an innovative and original manner. Please book before the 15th of October 2026.
