Alan's grief story centres around growing up in rural Ireland, how cultural norms and traditions affected the family when it came to the life and care of his sister Aoife, who was born with severe Cerebral Palsy and spent almost her whole life in care, separated from the familyAfter she died, Alan made a commemorative journey in her name, walking from Manchester to his childhood town of Dingle (and kayaking across the Irish Sea!) in order to understand his grief and the resulting depression he had carried with him most of his lifeSince then Alan has written a book about his journey and has continued his own healing and holds that space for others too
