First performed in 1960, it grew out of the rise of fascism in 1930s Europe, yet its questions feel more urgent than ever: why do people conform, and what does it take to stand apart from the crowd?In a quiet French town, an extraordinary epidemic begins to spread. One by one, neighbours, colleagues and friends transform into rhinoceroses, abandoning their humanity as they join the stampede. As the herd grows, only one man resists, forced to confront what it means to remain an individual when everyone else chooses another path.Comic, imaginative and thought-provoking, Rhinoceros combines sharp satire, lively ensemble performance and theatrical invention and shakes to the root our sense of ourselves as rational individuals, or individuals at all.Rhinoceros will be performed at the Woodclyffe Hall, Wargrave, from 21st to 24th October 2026.
