Originally formed in 2016, the aim of the MYDC is to create a platform for advanced contemporary dancers to push their creativity and technical skills, supporting them on the path to professional training and careers in the arts sector.
The company will perform two pieces: Conformity is Key, and Ashlish Jeh Arrane Oie Vie (with original music by Matthew Warren). The second piece was choreographed by Molly Bowman in collaboration with the company dancers especially for Mananan 50.Shannen Maria Samuel
BRAT (2024), created by Manx fashion designer Shannen Maria Samuel in collaboration with Somewherefilms, is a DIY proof-of-concept short film exploring the complexities of inner identity when moving from the Isle of Man to the chaos of London.The Art of the Invisible
Doug Francisco is a multidisciplinary artist, activist, and storyteller. He grew up on the Isle of Man with a background in music, street performance and theatre. He has directed many internationally renowned projects including roles as narrative director for Boomtown Fair and art director at Wake the Tiger, as well as founding the Red Rebel Brigade and the Invisible Circus. In 2025, IOM film-maker Glenn Whorrall made this film about Doug's interesting journey through life. This is the IOM premiere.
Artist Gary Bennett will be discussing his exhibition Connected To All Things. Ivor Ramsden MBE will also unveil the maquette for Missing, Gary's new sculpture commission for the IOM Aviation Museum.Matthew Warren
How often do we listen to the music of language? In a new commission for Culture Vannin's Triesht26, Matthew Warren explores the sound of the Manx language using recordings of native speakers from the 1950s. Instead of focusing on the meaning of the words, the audience is invited to hear the distinctive shapes of the sound of spoken Manx as musical in themselves. This project is part of Blein ny Gaelgey (Year of the Manx Language).Drogh Vraane
A new creative collective was launched in Peel this January. Sollan, based in Peel Centenary Centre, aims to provide a space for original storytelling and the imaginative interpretation of traditional and modern tales from the Isle of Man and beyond.
November 14th will see the group premiere Drogh Vraane (Bad Women), a new Manx language folk musical written by teacher, singer and songwriter Aalin Clague. The piece is inspired by the tragic tale of Ann Thompson, who drowned whilst being transported to Australia for the theft of 37 yards of lace.
As part of Ashlishyn Noa, they will be sharing a music video made in collaboration with local filmmaker Zoe Tweedie for Blein ny Gaelgey, based on a song from the courtroom scene. The group will also perform another scene that is under development for the live show.
