Museum : Thousands Are Flocking To The Standard 1798 Rebellion In Co Down

This unique conference is a partnership between Ards and North Down Borough Council and Newry Mourne and Down Council to discover unexplored aspects of the 1798 rebellion in County Down.

For many years conversations about the rebellion have focused on its leadership and on the military manoeuvres of the rebels against loyalist forces.

In this conference we discuss the actions and motivations of the lower and middle ranks to get a new perspective on the events of the rebellion.

Our speakers are from a variety of backgrounds including leading 1798 rebellion scholars and academics, historians and members of the local community.The conference will begin on Thursday 10th September in Bangor Castle, featuring presentations from Professor Andrew Holmes, Dr Jennifer Orr, and local historians Alison Murphy, Brian White and the Killinchy history detectives.On Friday, Down County Museum in Downpatrick will host the second day of the conference.

Speakers will include 1798 scholars Ken Dawson and Linda McKenna, Professor Brian Walker, Dr Johnathan Wright and historian Trevor Martin.Both days of the conference will include a 1798 themed tour guided by staff of North Down Museum and Down County Museum.
