Octopus Setting Masterclass
Sun 21 June
Level: Intermediate – Students will be working on a small scale, so hand/eye coordination and patience are a must for this session. You should already have the jewellery basics under your belt, such as sawing, filing, and soldering.Join us for a one-day Octopus Setting workshop and discover a contemporary stone-setting technique that’s as creative as it is distinctive. Octopus setting involves securing a round gemstone snugly within a small wire ring or jump ring, creating a three-dimensional, organic aesthetic reminiscent of octopus suckers — a striking alternative to traditional bezel or tube settings. This practical class offers an excellent opportunity to learn both textured and smooth octopus setting methods in a friendly, hands-on environment. You’ll begin by making the setting components and practice setting round stones into copper, working with a range of sizes to build confidence and precision. Once comfortable, you’ll progress to working in sterling silver, applying the techniques you’ve just learned to precious metal. Time-dependent, students will be able to make a small pendant or a set of earrings.Techniques covered:Choosing the correct stones for the octopus setting
Create the perfect size of jump rings for your settings
Making your own setting tool
Pushing the metal around the stone to hold it in place permanently
What to bring:We’ll provide all the things you will need for your Octopus Setting Masterclass; however, you are welcome to bring your own cabochons (3 or 5mm)
A sketch/notebook plus a pen/pencil for notes could come in handy for this workshop
Please bring along glasses and/or a visor if you need them
Wear appropriate clothing for a studio environment, including closed-toe shoes. Why not order yourself a CSSJ apron to make you feel right at home in your workshop?
Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided. Please bring your own lidded cup for use in the studio. While we do not have a dedicated lunch area, you are welcome to eat at your desk, and we can also recommend nearby places to eat if you prefer.
