The Bookery in partnership with Sustainable Crediton is delighted to welcome David Shukman for a timely and urgent evening marking the publication of his latest book, The Response: A Story of Fire and Flood in Britains New World of Extremes . One of the UKs most trusted voices on climate change, Shukman will be joined byLaurie Laybourn, a leading figure in climate risk, policy and resilience.Drawing on decades spent reporting from the frontlines of environmental change, The Response is a gripping and deeply human account of how Britain has moved onto the frontline of the climate emergency. From wildfires encroaching on towns to floods devastating communities, Shukman reveals how extreme weather events once thought inconceivable are now unfolding on our doorstep and how lives have already been lost that could have been saved. Rigorously researched and powerfully told, the book confronts the strain placed on our bodies, buildings and landscapes, while offering a cleareyed call to action.David Shukman was the BBCs first Science Editor and led its coverage of climate change and the environment for nearly twenty years. He has reported from the Amazon, Antarctica and disaster zones around the world, and was described by Sir David Attenborough as a leader in raising awareness about the climate emergency.
Laurie Laybourn is Executive Director of the Strategic Climate Risks Initiative and an awardwinning researcher. He holds fellowships at Chatham House, the University of Exeter and IPPR, advises the UK Climate Change Committee, and regularly appears in the media to discuss climate and systemic risk. This special event forms part of The Bookerys ongoing programme of author talks and cultural events, proudly supporting the National Year of Reading. The evening will include an audience Q&A and book signing.
