Dorothy Howell, admired by Edward Elgar and Henry Wood, broke gender barriers to become a major figure in London’s musical life, and her 1918 work Lamia was premiered to huge acclaim.

Just over a decade later, William Walton channelled the anguish of lost love into his Symphony No.1 – now considered one of the greatest English symphonies.

It’s a work Vasily Petrenko has praised, and he delivers it tonight to mark its composer’s 125th birthday.
