The Chromatic Labyrinth- Lose yourself in four centuries of extraordinary harmoniesStep into a musical labyrinth where nothing is quite as it seems. At its heart is Carlo Gesualdo, whose intensely expressive madrigals and sacred music pushed Renaissance harmony to extraordinary extremes - nowhere more strikingly than in the celebrated Moro, lasso, al mio duolo. From Gesualdo and the adventurous chromaticism of his English contemporary Thomas Weelkes, we'll follow unexpected paths through the intricate writing of Brahms's O Heiland, reiss die Himmel aufto Schoenberg's surprisingly approachable folk-song settings, Op. 49, based on melodies from the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. The path eventually leads us back to Gesualdo: his music fascinated twentieth-century modernists, and in the 1950s Stravinsky became so absorbed by it that he recomposed the missing voices of three of Gesualdo's incomplete Sacrae Cantiones, creating a remarkable meeting of two composers separated by nearly four centuries. A fascinating day of musical puzzles, unexpected
Harmonies and glorious choral singing. The recommended ticket price is 40.Buy Printed Music: Printed Music costs 5 which can be purchased in addition to your singing ticket.
