Arthur Denaro: Just Fighting: Morality in Conflict

One of the most thoughtful recent senior officers in the British Army, Major General Arthur Denaro will discuss Just Fighting: Morality in Conflict. In his talk, General Denaro speaks movingly on the lessons, both moral and practical, that he has learnt over a lifetime of soldiering.His talk draws particularly on his own experiences in three conflicts: the Dhofar war in the Oman during the 1970s, the first Gulf War (the war to liberate Kuwait) and then the conflict in the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s. He describes the importance of fighting in a just cause, noting that the principles of discrimination and proportionality are essential if war is not to descend into barbarism and the abandonment of humanity. He mourns the fact that traditional values and standards are no longer being applied in the current conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza and Iran and suggests that peaceful reconciliation will be almost impossible to achieve as a result.
