Celebrating the publication of twenty novels over a 20 year span, Johnstone has seen multiple titles become bestsellers, with The Space Between Us featured on BBC Two’s Between the Covers and several books shortlisted or longlisted for both the Theakston Crime Novel of the Year and the McIlvanney Prize.
Beyond his writing, Johnstone has taught creative writing in universities, schools, festivals, prisons and even a funeral directors, and has worked as an arts journalist for over twenty‑five years.
