Double Bill 1: The Lark Ascending

Storytelling and landscape rub shoulders in this afternoon concert of English music, featuring star mezzo-soprano Kitty Whately and outstanding violinist Sophie Rosa.Vaughan Williams perennial favourite The Lark Ascendingcaptures a moment of pure, transcendent stillness, the soaring violin line evoking the timeless beauty of an English landscape. Songs by Vaughan Williams sit alongside: his settings of poetry by Fredegond Shove paint rural vignettes ranging from the Water Mill to an unsettling encounter with A New Ghost.Central to the programme is music by Rebecca Clarke, whose work has rightfully been celebrated in recent years for its vivid, evocative language and spellbinding atmosphere.
