Tom McLaughlin - Alan, King of the Universe

The Bookery is delighted to welcome acclaimed Devon author and illustrator Tom McLaughlin for a fun-filled and creative children's event.Join author and illustrator, Tom McLaughlin as he introduces his graphic novel series, Alan, King of the Universe - su-purr-bly funny adventures about a cat born with opposable thumbs and bent on world domination. Tom will show you how to create comic strips and how to draw some of the characters from his side-splitting graphic novel.Perfect for children aged 7+, the event will bring to life the hilarious world of Alan, an ambitious orange cat who is convinced he was born to rule. Armed with opposable thumbs and an endless supply of outrageous schemes, Alan spends his days plotting world domination, creating his own country and dreaming up ever more ridiculous plans, while his loyal dog sidekick Fido happily joins the chaos.Packed with laughs, drawing tips and plenty of inspiration for young readers and aspiring artists, this interactive session offers children a chance to discover how graphic novels are created, learn the basics of comic-strip storytelling and watch Tom demonstrate how he develops his unforgettable characters.Tom McLaughlin is an award-nominated author-illustrator living in Exeter. Before becoming a full-time creator of children's books, he worked as a political cartoonist and animation designer. His books have been translated into more than ten languages and are loved by young readers for their humour, creativity and heart.This event forms part of The Bookerys vibrant programme of author and community events, proudly supporting the National Year of Reading 2026.
