America 250: The Sussex Declaration

To mark the 250th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence, West Sussex Record Office is holding special viewings of the unique document that has become known as the Sussex Declaration.As well as the opportunity to see and learn more about the Sussex Declaration itself, there will also be tours behind the scenes and the chance to see some of the many other documents that show the shared history of West Sussex and the United States over the centuries.The Sussex Declaration has been held at the Record Office since 1956 and in 2016 a project by Harvard University led to significant discoveries about the document which was heralded as the only known contemporary ceremonial parchment manuscript copy of the American Declaration of Independence apart from the signed original at the US National Archives.Advance booking essential – book your ticket to avoid disappointment
