This concert will be a particularly special one for the Orchestra as it is 40 years since we gave our first concert as an independent orchestra, so we feel we have much to celebrate.We are pleased to welcome James Burton back to conduct the Orchestra, following a very distinguished period in his career in the USA. Khrystyna Mykhailichenko has previously joined us to give outstanding performances of major concertos by Rachmaninov, Brahms and Beethoven, and to have her play Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini will be special treat.
Butterworth’s Shropshire Lad, is a beautiful and poignant work and provides, if it can be defined, a certain ‘English’ quality.
In 1986 we were pleased to be in Durham Cathedral to play the Saint-Saëns ‘Organ’ Symphony, so we thought, for our 40th anniversary concert, why now repeat the pleasure in our superb current venue, Newcastle Cathedral? A truly majestic piece of music, with a celebratory finale, it will be most appropriate for the occasion.
Please note the concert starts at 7.00pm. Doors will be open at 6.15 and there will be refreshments available in the Cathedral from that time.
