Freedom of the City

‘Freedom of The City’ is a new play created by the young people from 5th Element in response to their city, Belfast, its physical landscape and public spaces, the place we call home. The 5th Element Youth Theatre were successful in their advocating and campaigning at The City Hall and secured funding from the Bank of Ideas.
It is a ‘love letter’ to the city we call home, a visceral, current, theatrical response to the specific locations and places we move through as we live our lives, a look at how a place can shape you. This physical and intergenerational ensemble performance, featuring additional members of Plan B and the wider 5th Element hip-hop community, explores identity in a unique and celebratory way and gives an insight into the fabric of the ‘ here and now’ of the city. This has all the cultural references you will recognise and relate to Belfast, to our ‘home’. True to the Hip- Hop ethos, the themes of community, knowledge of self and raising others up are interwoven into this play, shared with passion and truth and accompanied by a live DJ. Storytelling at its best.
