After the attacks on October 7 2023, many around the world expressed shock and sympathy for Israel.
But within a few short months most of this sympathy was gone as the world recoiled in horror at the brutality of the Israeli response, while poll after poll showed overwhelming support in Israeli society for the level of violence being inflicted by their military.
In this documentary film, British-American filmmaker Gillian Mosely, herself Jewish and appalled at the unfolding genocide in Gaza, sets out to understand what has led Jews in Israel - a people with a history of being oppressed, othered and subjected to genocide - to exhibit this moral and humanitarian numbness.
In this fascinating and deeply personal film, Gillian meets people across numerous areas of expertise including mental health, politics, the media and religion in her quest to get to grips with attitudes in Israel in today.
At the outset, the BAFTA-winning filmmaker believed she was making a film about trauma.
But as she delves deeper into the subject, the reality turns out to be so much darker than she'd imagined as the mechanisms behind our disintegrating democracies and international laws are exposed.Join us for this one-off Hastings screening of this important film, followed by a discussion and Q&A with director-producer Gillian Mosley.
