Hardeep Matharu examines how journalism's traditional claim to objectivity obscures a deeper truth: every story begins from a standpoint.
Hardeep Matharu examines how journalism's traditional claim to objectivity obscures a deeper truth: every story begins from a standpoint.
Whether reporting on justice, inequality, or democracy, journalists make choices (how to frame an issue, whose voices to centre, which experiences to illuminate, what questions to ask) and those choices reflect values, assumptions, and lived experience; as well as power structures both overt and invisible.
Drawing on her work with marginalised communities and the criminal justice system, as well as how the media influences politics and society, she explores how perspective shapes public understanding, how hidden biases influence narratives of crime and punishment, why acknowledging standpoint can strengthen trust in journalism - and how, ultimately, a multiple-lens approach can provide a deeper and richer understanding of who we are and the world around us.
With clarity and compassion, Matharu argues for a more honest, human centred, approach to storytelling that recognises where we stand and why it matters.
