Northern Heights

The third Nottingham Symphony Orchestra season under the baton of Music Director Mark Prescott begins on 7th November, in the splendid surroundings of St Mary's Church, Nottingham.

The concert - titled Northern Heights - will feature music by Richard Strauss, English composer Ruth Gipps and Jean Sibelius.Death and Transfiguration is a beloved tone poem by Richard Strauss, one of his earliest successes, while the First Symphony by Jean Sibelius is a striking opening statement in one of the greatest of all symphonic cycles, by a composer whose music is always immediately distinctive.In between these two more familiar works will be the chance to hear the Horn Concerto written by Ruth Gipps, whose output is experiencing a welcome resurgence of interest after years of relative neglect.

This appealing concerto is a fearsome test for any soloist - in this case it will be the highly talented Chloe Harrison - and was premiered in 1969 by the composer's son Lance Baker when he was setting out on his career as a professional horn player.
