Women Re-written: Elle Machray and Mairi Kidd

Our final book event brings together two authors rewriting womens stories, both fictional and real, Following her highly praised debut Remember Remember , Elle Machraywill discuss her latest novel Havisham , a queer, feminist retelling of one of Dickens most enigmatic characters.

Mairi Kidds Poor Creatures explores Mary Shelleys childhood experiences visiting Dundee years before she authored Frankenstein, while Kidds latest novel Newes of Witches is a historic novel set during the Scottish witch trials.

The event is in conjunction with the UoAs Centre for the Novel and will be chaired by Dr Helena Ilfill.Elle Machray grew up in Birmingham to WelshCaribbean and Scottish parents.

After graduating from the HarperCollins Author Academy in spring 2021, their debut novel Remember, Remember was longlisted for the Mslexia Novel Prize, judged by Hilary Mantel.Mairi Kidd is the author of the novels Newes of Witches, Poor Creatures and The Specimens , a Waterstones Book of the Month, as well as non-fiction for adults and fiction and non-fiction for younger readers.

She is a Gaelic speaker and has a particular interest in untold stories and forgotten voices, especially the experiences of women and 'ordinary folk' in the past.
