The Two-Character Play

By Tennessee WilliamsThe Two-Character Play is an intimate two-hander about a brother and sister bound together by love, but also by circumstance and a past trauma that has slowly cut them off from the outside world. Their relationship is tender and fierce, but also codependent and edging toward toxicity, two people trapped in patterns they cannot break, and in each other. It is a play within a play, where the boundaries between reality and performance dissolve entirely the space they inhabit may be a theatre or a home, and we are never certain what is real and what is not. At its heart it is a play about those who are deemed too broken, too strange, too damaged to belong and what becomes of them when the world walks away.As South Asian immigrant artists, we know something of living on the edge of a world that wasn't built with us in mind and in Felice and Clare, we recognise that truth. Too often, the world assumes that stories like Tennessee Williams's aren't ours to tell. Contemporary theatre too often frames these stories through a narrow lens of race, accent, or geography, stripping away the universality and depth of his work. Reimagined through a South Asian lens, this is our way of claiming our author back, because the truth we keep returning to is that this story was never anyone's to keep, and always everyone's to tell.CAST
