Lecture Memorialising Andrewes

This special lecture which will take place onThursday, 15 October, will be presented byProfessor Peter McCullough of Lincoln College Oxford. Peter is the leading authority on the work of John Donne and Lancelot Andrewes, has published widely on both, and is the General Editor of The Oxford Edition of the Sermons of John Donne, 16 volumes (2015- ). This lecture will explore the life, work and legacy of Lancelot Andrewes, Bishop of Chichester from 1605 -1609, covering his lasting influence on theology, preaching, liturgy and the Churchs spiritual tradition.Lancelot Andrewes (1555-1626) was a leading theologian of the early seventeenth century, served as Bishop of Chichester between 1605 and 1609, moving on to Ely, then Winchester, and becoming, along the way, Dean of the Chapel Royal. Andrewes was one of the theologians instrumental in the making of the King James Bible of 1611. Famous for his knowledge of the Church Fathers, his sermons, and his interest in liturgy, his works influenced the Oxford Movement/ High Church revival of the nineteenth century.Programme5.30pm:A service of ChoralEvensong with prayers derived from the work of Bishop Andrewes and a newly commissioned anthem inspired by hisPreces Privatae(Private Prayers), composed by Revd. With its roots dating back to 1397, this splendid hall holds centuries of stories and has witnessed the likes of Keats during his stay in Chichester.Finding Vicars' Hall: Vicars Hall is within the Chichester Cathedral precinct. Public access is via the Cathedral Green, not directly from South Street. Enter from West Street, cross the Cathedral Green, and follow signage for Vicars Hall. It is a short walk (about 510 minutes) from Chichester railway station through the city centre. There is no on-site parking. Access:Vicars Hall is on the first floor, and it is split across three levels (see floor plan). The lower area of the hall and toilets are accessible to wheelchair users throughout the event.
