Step back into the extraordinary wartime history of the fort on our second full guided tour of the year, with a special focus on its remarkable and largely hidden role during World War II. Discover the fascinating stories behind the pioneering technologies developed and operated here, including loop detection systems, PLUTO, early sonar experiments, remote minefields, messenger pigeons, and a newly uncovered chapter in radar history. Alongside these technological breakthroughs, our volunteer research team will share the deeply personal stories of the men and women who served at the fort, bringing their experiences vividly to life. The tour also includes a rare opportunity to descend into the forts dry ditch, where the recently discovered foundations and floors of wartime Nissen huts reveal what was once a small, bustling community of engineers. Many of these specialists were Canadians stationed far from home, working around the clock throughout the war to develop a revolutionary new form of radar designed to protect the nation.Event Details
