"She was the twentieth century.

Who wouldn’t want to write her biography?" Acclaimed travel writer Sara Wheeler explores the remarkable life of Jan Morris - journalist, pioneer and one of the defining voices of modern travel writing.

From breaking the news of Everest’s ascent to reporting on the Adolf Eichmann trial and interviewing Che Guevara, she lived at the centre of her age.

Her gender transition in the 1970s marked her as a figure far ahead of her time, while seminal works such as Venice and the Pax Britannica trilogy reshaped how we write about place.

We delve into our archive to recall Jan’s visits to the Festival over the years, and celebrate an extraordinary life in full - restless, complex and impossible to pin down.

Chaired by The Times Executive Editor Jeremy Griffin.

There will be a book signing after this event.
