Highly acclaimed contemporary Scottish artist Jamie Primrose celebrates his 50th solo exhibition (across Edinburgh and London) since he became a professional painter in 2003.
Primrose presents a special, memorable journey – containing some of his favourite themes and works of the Scottish capital throughout the years (2003-2026).This retrospective highlights his trademark mastery of beautifully capturing ephemeral light, colour and atmosphere onto his native city.
Drawing inspiration from Edinburgh’s sculptural landscape, this stunning collection of over 50 original oil paintings and limited edition prints accentuates a skilful eye for detail and ethereal light impressions at dawn and dusk in his delicate brushstrokes.Initially, his gorgeous seasonal Meadows series features mesmerising soft blush cherry blossom petals gently flourishing in springtime.
This is followed by warm, autumnal late afternoon tones flickering through branches, transitioning into a rich sunset afterglow, while sparkling snow patterns glisten in illuminating winter light.Next, the iconic Old Town beckons with tranquil snapshots – from the colourful facades of Victoria Street, to the Grassmarket, Lawnmarket and along the Royal Mile, with additional pleasing glimpses of silent snowfalls.Onto breathtaking panoramic hilltop views which inspire and delight – from Calton Hill overlooking the silhouette of majestic city spires and sweeping cloudscapes over Arthur’s Seat and St.
Margaret’s Loch, Primrose’s transient fiery sunset colour palette ranges from vibrant magenta, glowing crimson to burnt umber. This is beautifully contrasted with a selection of the best-selling artist’s earlier winter cityscapes – striking in shades of icy-blue, yet soft and atmospheric, evoking a captivating ethereal quality drawing the eye to fine illustrative details beneath the paint layers, revealing luxurious depth and texture. Finally, Primrose’s exceptional retrospective concludes with a collection of watery vistas in and around Edinburgh – from gentle late afternoon ripples on the Water of Leith to crystal-clear, serene winter reflections on the Shore and resplendent sunset skylines over Portobello Beach, Newhaven Harbour and the Forth Bridges.Whilst offering an insight into an amazing creative journey since 2003, Primrose’s work often evokes fond memories for the viewer of happy times – special walks and favourite vistas (past and present) – to be savoured at this exhibition, which is not to be missed.
