The plot follows the vain, ageing dandy Sir Harcourt Courtly, who travels to Gloucestershire to marry the young heiress Grace Harkaway.

His plans unravel when his son Charles arrives in disguise and falls in love with Grace himself.

Their rivalry is further complicated by the exuberant Lady Gay Spanker, whose wit, independence, and theatrical energy dominate the action.

Full of mistaken identities, social pretence, romantic intrigue, and verbal brilliance, the play satirizes vanity, class manners, and fashionable hypocrisy with delight.
