It's always a great night at Smokey Joe's Jazz Club hosted monthly by the jazz club team (Alex Steele, Mike Green, Kim Cypher and Mike Cypher) at one of Cheltenham's coolest venues.
The jazz club has a warm, friendly vibe where EVERYONE IS WELCOME.
It's very much a community / family where everyone gets to know everyone. This month were delighted to welcome brilliant vibraphonist, Nat Steele, as our special guest of the month at Smokey Joes Jazz Club on Thursday 23rd April 2026.
Nats sound emanates from his love of straight-ahead jazz and bebop.
Inspired by vibraphone players including Milt Jackson and Cal Tjader, Nat takes a two-mallet approach to improvisation, focusing on melodic interpretation with an incredible feel for swinging bebop, hard bop and mainstream jazz. One of Nats most recent collaborations has been with American tenor saxophonist, Scott Hamilton, and they recorded together on Nats album Afternoon in Paris, celebrating the music of John Lewis and the MJQ.
Nats sound and musicality attract the attention of jazz journalists, jazz clubs, and from fellow musicians.
Hes had compliments from the likes of Benny Green, Joe Locke, Jason Marsalis, Harold Mabern and Eric Alexander. As well as leading his own all-star bands, he is regularly invited to join visiting artists, and sat in with the amazing Benny Green and Wynton Marsalis.
They loved his playing!A truly stellar all-round performance: Stop-time chords, neat turnarounds, valid interchanges, nimble adjustments all jazz life was here ...
Peter Vacher, Jazzwise MagazineAnd of course, youre wondering, is Nat Steele the brother, cousin or son of our house pianist, Alex Steele.
Come along and find out! Nat will be joined by the Smokey Joes awesome jazz house band, with the barefoot energy, flying socks and passion of Alex Man of Steele on piano; the mighty groove merchant, Mike Cypher on drums, always ready to grab those unexpected beats and turn them into unrivalled rhythmical joy; and the beautifully melodic, lyrical, eloquent and effervescent, Mike Moyk Green on double bass. Were looking forward to seeing you there!
